Personal Statement:
Communication between cells, and also between cells and their surrounding support structures, both play crucial roles as organs develop and grow. Dr. Ross's laboratory is interested in studying how the cardiac myocyte interacts with each other, with other cell types within the myocardium, and with the extracellular matrix as the heart develops in the embryo, and as the post-natal heart is stimulated to undergo pathologic growth. His group utilizes a combination of molecular biological techniques and physiological analyses, along with cell culture, transgenic and knockout mouse models, to study this process. The current principal focus of the lab involves the study of integrins and integrin associated proteins, as signaling and cell-adhesive molecules, during cardiac hypertrophy and heart development.
