Personal Statement:

Dr. Brody’s research career has focused on brain imaging and treatment of cigarette smokers.  In previous studies, his group has used positron emission tomography (PET) scanning to examine the effects of smoking on glucose metabolism, dopamine receptor availability, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) availability, and neuroinflammation.  In these contexts, his research has demonstrated effects of smoking and cessation on smoking-induced dopamine release, nAChR availability, nAChR occupancy, and inflammation.  As director of smoking cessation programs at the VA San Diego Healthcare System (and formerly the VA Greater Los Angeles), he has treated approximately 6000 cigarette smokers (and other tobacco/nicotine users).  As PI for the proposed PET and treatment research, he oversees and coordinates all aspects of study implementation, including participant recruitment, initial evaluations, rating scale administration, PET and magnetic resonance imaging sessions, evaluations of smoking status, complying with all regulatory requirements, statistical analysis of data, and preparation of data for scientific meeting and manuscript presentations.
