Veterans Medical Research Foundation (VMRF) is
a private not-for-profit research corporation dedicated to supporting
the research mission of the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS).
VMRF was established as a 501 (c) (3) corporation in the State
of California in 1989. VMRF's purpose is to promote biomedical
and health services research through comprehensive research
resource management.
VMRF is the second largest of 85 active VA Foundations with an annual budget approaching $30 Million and a staff of more than 200 employees. As of August 2007, VMRF employs 31 core administrative staff. The majority of VMRF employees are research support employees who work with VA investigators in their research labs and clinics in positions such as research associates or coordinators. In addition, VMRF supports about 15 staff providing operational and administrative support at the San Diego VAMC.
VMRF currently works with about 115 VA Investigators, assisting them with the administration of over 200 active studies which seek to improve the lives of the nation's Veterans as they deal with a wide range of physical and mental health issues. As of July 2007, VMRF administers the following types of research studies:
- 58 Federally Funded Projects
- 92 Clinical Trials
- 25 Research Study Subcontracts
- 27 Private Foundation funded research studies
Annually, VMRF provides about $4.5 Million of infrastructure support to the VASDHS, which includes many staff positions, recruitment packages, equipment service agreements, training support, recharge facilities, and ongoing facility support both for VA Space and the VMRF Research Building. The VMRF research building was completed in March 2004 and houses foundation and VA research staff.
